Tips to Stop and Prevent Hair Loss

There are many factors that can contribute to hair loss. Here are some tips and steps you can take to prevent and possible reverse hair loss:

1.    Diet

-       Hair is made of a type of protein called keratin. Eating a protein rich diet can help prevent hair loss by encouraging growth and strengthening hair.

-       Vitamin A has been shown to keep the scalp healthier and retain more hair. If you’re not getting enough vitamins from your diet, a multivitamin with vitamins A, B, C, D, iron, selenium, and zinc are essential to hair growth and retention.

-       Diet and nutrition also plays a key role for anyone undergoing hair restoration treatment. Here at Princeton Hair Restoration, we guide people as to best the best diet and supplements they can take to maintain successful results.

2.    Hair care

-       Regular washing with gentle shampoos is important in keeping the scalp healthy and clean. Harsh shampoos can cause hair to break and irritate the scalp, so it is important to find the right shampoos for your hair type. Also, overuse of dry shampoo has been shown to trap dirt at the root and cause excessive shedding.

-       Studies have also shown that certain oils can help to promote hair growth, prevent hair loss, and condition hair. These oils include coconut oil, olive oil, and castor oil. It is important to use oils in moderation, and wash out completely to keep the scalp clean.

3.    Hair style

-       Certain hair styles can cause excessive pulling on the hair shaft causing something called traction alopecia. Try to avoid overly tight braids, head bands, and ponytails. If your hairstyle is giving you a headache, it’s probably doing damage to your hair growth as well.

4.    Medications

-       Minoxidil (commonly known as Rogaine) is an over-the-counter drug, which has been shown to encourage hair growth. This comes as a liquid or foam that you apply to your scalp every single day, but does have side effects such as scalp irritation, irregular heartbeat, and blurred vision.

-       Finasteride (known as Propecia) is a prescription that may help slowdown hair loss and stimulate new hair growth. As with many prescriptions, this also has side effects.

-       Phenylephrine taken topically may help with hair loss due to styling by stimulating the follicle muscles to contract, making it harder to pull out hairs while styling. However, this is not widely available yet.

5.    Medical Treatments

If the above steps are not working for you, it might be time to seek medical treatment. Princeton Hair Restoration offers the latest technology in hair restoration to make your head look fuller and more natural than the others. We offer a customized hair treatment plan to each of our patients. As no two heads of hair are the same, no treatment plan is either. Below are the treatments offered by our board-certified doctors:

-       Laser Light Therapy (LLT) is ideal for those who are just beginning to lose their hair. No matter your gender, you can stop your hair loss and start growing thick, luscious locks. LLT works by treating the scalp with low level laser lights to stimulate hair follicles and induce growth. We use top of the line equipment from Kiier, a renowned laser hair growth brand.

-       Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment can provide natural looking results without the need for a costly, invasive surgical procedure. Plasma is taken from your own blood, separated out and injected into your scalp. This repairs blood vessels and stimulates collagen production. Over time, you’ll notice that your own natural hair is growing back better than ever.

-       Stem Cell hair treatment is derived from your own fat cells in your body. Similar to PRP, stem cells are rich in growth factors and mesenchymal regenerative cells and injected together into your scalp during a single treatment session. This reverses the shrinking of hair follicles and promotes healthy hair growth.

-       Hair Transplant has come a long way from since unsightly hair plugs and toupees. Case in point: NeoGraft Hair Restoration, the industry leader in Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). NeoGraft Hair Transplants are virtually pain free, minimally invasive, and require no downtime or sedation.
